Joker star Joaquin Phoenix has been in a long-time relationship with partner Rooney Mara. Now, an accidental slip on a talk show might have revealed that he is actually married to her.

On Sunday, Phoenix appeared on the ‘Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso’ show to discuss his latest release, Joker: Folie A Deux. As the two talked about the movie, the conversation turned towards the 2020 Oscars, when Phoenix won the Best Actor award for his role in and as Joker. While speaking about his rousing speech that followed his acceptance, he recalled having discussed it with “my mom and my wife.”

Yes, that’s right. He actually referred to long-time partner Rooney Mara as ‘his wife’. He, in fact, left no space for speculation after he explicitly said, “Rooney said, ‘Yes, that’s what you should do.’

So, are the two married finally after getting engaged in 2019? Phoenix did not clarify on the show, but the slip-up has got fans talking.

Phoenix’s Powerful 2020 Oscars Speech

Back in 2020, he delivered a powerful speech about issues such as racism, sexism, and environmental concerns.

A lifelong vegan, he had said, “I think that we’ve become very disconnected from the natural world, and many of us, what we’re guilty of is an egocentric worldview, the belief that we’re the center of the universe,” he said.

“We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and when she gives birth, we steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable. And then we take her milk that’s intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.”

He is the second actor to win a Best Actor Oscar for playing Joker after the death of Heath Ledger.

The actor has been vegan since the age of three and is an animal rights activist. He has produced several documentaries on the effects of global meat consumption.

He met Mara on the sets of a movie called ‘Her’ back in 2012. They started dating five years later, in 2017, and got engaged in 2019. The two have a son called River, who is named after Phoenix’s late brother. Rooney is currently pregnant with their second child.
