Selena Gomez: From Disney Darling to Mental Health Queen

Selena Gomez’s life was filled with roses, thorns, and bushes as she struggled both mentally and physically.

Selena Gomez, who has always been an inspiration for her fans and followers, has seen some really tough times. Selena’s life wasn’t exactly a bed of red roses but it came with thorns and bushes, which she transparently showed to the world.

The singer, actor, producer, and entrepreneur have gained most of these titles at a young age. With lots of fame and earning millions, people must think Gomez has an amazing life, which she has but not from the beginning.

Most of the things in Selena Gomez’s life have been out in public and nothing is hidden about her mental health struggles. The celebrity, who gained fame at a very young age, started struggling with her mental health.

My Mind & Me, the Documentary

After her open conversation on mental health and advocating for mental health struggles, Selena took the transparency of her case to another level with the creation of her documentary, My Mind & Me, in 2022.

Selena wanted to be open about her experience and vocal about the importance of mental health. She wanted to reach as many people as she could through her documentary and help all of them by making them realize seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of and she wanted to heal people as much as she could.

Diagnosis of Lupus

Selena Gomez has portrayed her glam life in her documentary, as well as her struggles after becoming a global sensation, her diagnosis of Lupus, and the mental health issues she faced after that. All of it was so overwhelming that she had to seek professional help for her mental health.

Diagnosis of Depression and Anxiety

When Selena was diagnosed with Lupus, she was facing a lot of stress, both physically and mentally. Lupus has already developed mental stress, leading her to be clinically diagnosed with anxiety, panic attacks, and depression.

After she underwent Lupus treatment and her kidney surgery, Selena went to therapy multiple times a week. Her most effective method of therapy was Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which helped to regulate stress, understand her thinking pattern, and work on it.

Diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder

She did group therapy and in-person therapy to get out of her depression and lessen her anxiety and panic attacks. Later, she was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder for which she underwent treatments and took medication.

Selena Gomez has come a long way on her mental health journey. All the therapies and medications have helped her deal with her feelings and overwhelming emotions. After all these, she went through her primary focus, which was to provide help and raise awareness about mental health.

Her documentary, My Mind & Me, helps greatly in understanding the importance of mental health and figuring out who we are. Even Selena Gomez has advised, “You should never stop figuring out who you are; I just hope that people who are suffering know they’re not alone.”
