The organizers of the Met Gala 2025 have announced the theme for next year’s event. And it is going to be—- black style. It was officially titled ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’.
The chairs for the event include Lewis Hamilton rappers A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. LeBron James is going to be present as a ‘special’ chair for the ball.
According to Vogue magazine, the Costume Institute Show is going to ‘take the Black dandy as its subject, examining the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora.’
The theme has sparked a debate online. While some fans agree with the organizers, others say that this will allow ‘cultural appropriation to be back in Vogue’. One user wrote, “Wow! I’m impressed! This is amazing! I could see Beyoncé attending this one!”
Another one wrote, “A great opportunity to involve Black fashion historians, stylists, and innovators as cultural commentators and writers. Don’t mess this up.”
However, others weren’t as pumped about it. One disapproving user said, “Black Americans? Who are you talking about? Black people aren’t all the same. Stop using Black Americans’ culture and not representing history properly.”
But most of the users on social media were supportive and approving, with one particularly over-enthusiastic person writing, “LEWIS HAMILTON AT FERRARI AS WELL AS HOSTING THE MET GALA NEXT YEAR. WE ARE ABOUT TO EAT SO BADLY. PREPARE TO BE SICK OF ME!!!!!!!!”
This Met Gala theme is iconic for many reasons. This will be the first time (since the “Men in Skirts” exhibition that was held in 2003) that the Met Gala will be focusing on menswear and holding it in the spotlight.
On top of that, this is the first time that there is going to be guest curator- Monica Miller. She is the Professor and Chair of Africana Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University. According to Vogue, the show’s theme is inspired by Miller’s book ‘Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity’.
As per the study of Miller, the whole concept of Black ‘dandyism’ is “a strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary—especially during the time of enslavement—to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human, even.”
The event will be open to the general public between May 10 -October 26, 2025. Trust us when we say that we are all waiting eagerly for it!
