The Karl-Orfeh separation was a shocker for those Broadway fans who have always seen the couple giving couple-goals! Not just the fans, but the theatre world could also not believe that the Tony nominee couple, Andy Karl and Orfeh, would split their paths after 23 years of marriage.
The Karl-Orfeh couple is well-known for their onstage performances centered around musical adaptations of Saturday Night Fever, Pretty Woman, and Legally Blonde. They first met when they were cast in Saturday Night Fever. After six months, they eloped and married. Orfeh has previously mentioned in an interview with Playbill that Karl was “love at first sight.” She also said that both were interested in each other and that everything happened mutually.
Just as their bond flourished through on-stage chemistry and off-stage romance, their careers also took off, earning them fame. Orfeh and Karl also became joint performers in concerts and made staple red-carpet appearances at events supporting the Broadway community. Orfeh has also mentioned themselves as soulmates. Thus, when the news of their separation came to light, it felt like it was coming out of nowhere.
Did Long-Distance Relationship Make A Hole In Their Marriage?
The couple was having a long-distance relationship and staying out of New York for a while. Karl was in Australia for the Tony-nominated role in the Antipodean production of the musical “Groundhog Day.” The show premiered at the Old Vic in London and ran for about four months, starting in May 2023.
Later, the show was transferred to the Prince Theatre in London, where it ran until April 20th. During this time, the actor developed a good friendship with his co-star, Aussie Elise McCann, portraying Andie McDowell. Their friendship seemed to transcend the stage.
The fans did not see this news of separation coming! In February, Orfeh went to Australia to visit Karl and they were in Melbourne together. It was hard to speculate that something was off between them. He informed her about the split shortly before she was about to leave for the US.
Moreover, Karl posted an online statement informing the fans about their separation on May 14th. In the statement, he wrote, “After 23 years of a wonderful, loving relationship, both onstage and off, we have decided to separate.” In the statement, he mentioned they were working on “opposite sides of the world.” Thus, it was becoming hard for them to keep their marriage strong. He added that both will work for their future, “whether together or apart.” The statement also asked for respect and privacy at this time. Allegedly, he signed Orfeh’s name there without telling her about it.
After the separation, one source closer to the couple held Karl’s midlife crisis responsible for the split. They also added that falling in love while starring in a show while being out of the normal reality is not similar to living a relationship that exists in day-to-day life.
